A generic form of fibre bundle models for root reinforcement of soil

Abstract Purpose The mechanical contribution of plant roots to the soil shear strength is commonly modelled using fibre bundle models (FBM), accounting for sequential breakage roots. This study provides a generic framework, able includes many different existing approaches, quantify effect various model assumptions. Methods framework uses (1) single parameter determining how load shared between all roots, (2) continuous power-law distribution root area ratio over range diameters, and (3) relationships diameters biomechanical properties. A new sharing parameter, closely resembling mobilise under landslide conditions, proposed. Exact analytical solutions were found peak reinforcement, thus eliminating current need iterative algorithms. Model assumptions results validated against reinforcement data. Results Root reinforcements proved very sensitive user-defined parameter. It shown that method discretising in discrete diameter classes prior calculations leads significant overestimations reinforcement. Addition probabilistic failure by means Weibull survival functions, adding second source mobilisation, further reduced predicted reinforcements, but only when reduction due was limited. Conclusion presented greatly simplify while maintaining exactness as well clarity made. proposed standardisation bundle-type will aid comparison exchange
